Spokane Airport Sues The Federal Aviation Administration

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – Felts Field in Spokane is preparing to lose some employees, but they say they won't lose them without a fight. The F-A-A says air traffic control operations will end at the airport and other small airports across the country starting in just a few weeks. Billions of dollars in budget cuts are to blame, but Felts Field and the Spokane Airport Director aren't taking it well and they say they will sue to put a stop to it.

The Spokane Airport Board believes by taking this action the F-A-A is removing a huge layer of safety for all fliers and the board thinks the F-A-A is doing this without doing their homework. There are about 149 towers set to close and usually about six to seven people work at each tower. Larry Krauter the Chief Executive Officer of Spokane International Airport says that this is not only a local concern, but a national one. Airport Directors are worried about safety and flight separation if the FAA moves forward with their decision.

The Spokane Airport Board is asking for the F-A-A to change their mind about removing air traffic controllers or they will move forward suing the F-A-A. The board says this decision would place the importance of separation more squarely on the pilots of individual aircraft. The F-A-A has until Tuesday of next week to respond to the notice that they are being sued and if they do not respond in the way the board likes then they will continue with their plans. Krauter says the board is getting a whole lot of support from several other small airports in the same situation.
