**Press Release From Spokane County Sheriff's Office**

SPOKANE, Wash. - On Saturday night, March 30, 2013, at about 11:30 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy T. Miller advised dispatch of a vehicle driving reckless in the area of Broadway and Dyer Road. Deputy Miller lost sight of the vehicle and a short time later, Deputy T. Smith said the same vehicle nearly hit him head-on in the area of Park and Sprague. Deputy Smith ...estimated the speed of the vehicle near 100 mph.

A short time later, Corporal J. Elliott located the vehicle near 5th and Coleman. Two occupants exited the vehicle and the vehicle left at a high rate of speed westbound on 5th towards Thierman Road. The vehicle turned north onto Thierman failing to stop for the posted stop sign. The vehicle continued north on Thierman failing to stop at the stop light on Appleway before turning west onto Sprague.

Corporal Elliott saw the vehicle take the I-90 westbound on-ramp at a high rate of speed. Corporal Elliott lost sight of the vehicle near the Thor/Freya exit. Air 1 was in service and advised the vehicle had taken the Thor/Freya exit. The vehicle drove off the road on the southwest corner of Thor and 2nd, crashed through the fence and drove down the north embankment onto I-90. The vehicle struck a vehicle on I-90 that was traveling westbound in the northernmost outside lane of travel on I-90.

Containment was established and a Spokane Police Department K-9 unit was utilized to track the driver, who had fled the scene. 27-year-old Daniel Wessels was located a short time later and taken into custody.

Wessels was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the charges of Felony Eluding, DUI, Driving While License Suspended 1st Degree and Hit and Run. The driver of the vehicle that was struck on I-90 was arrested for DUI.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County Deputies arrested a man following a chaotic chase that ended near the Thor/Freya exit on I-90 early Sunday morning.

It started when officers responded to a call about a reckless driver in the area of 6th and Theirman just before midnight. As deputies approached the car, the driver sped off at a high rate of speed.

Deputies say they lost the car a few times during the chase and at one point the driver, now identified as 27-year-old Daniel Wessels, almost crashed into a police vehicle going approximately 100mph.

Multiple agencies were called in to assist with the pursuit, including the Sheriff's helicopter. Once the suspect was located near the exit ramp at 2nd and Thor, witnesses say he was driving too fast and jumped the curb, went through the fence, down an embankment, hit a car on I-90 and eventually came to rest. The driver of the other car did not receive any major injuries, however they were intoxicated and arrested for DUI.

Following the crash, Wessels took off on foot from the scene. He was eventually located by a K-9 unit and arrested. He was taken to the hospital with a broken back, and will be taken to jail following treatment for multiple charges, including at least one felony Eluding.

Previous Coverage:

SPOKANE, Wash.  – One person was taken to the hospital early Sunday morning after crashing through a fence at 2nd Ave. and Thor St. at a high rate of speed, and coming to a stop in the westbound median of Interstate 90. That driver then took off running on foot, initiating a chase. The driver was eventually arrested and taken to a local hospital.

Officers first responded to a call regarding a reckless driver in a black car in the area of 6th Ave. and Thierman Rd.  around 11:30PM Saturday night.

As officers approached, the driver sped off, eventually getting onto westbound I-90. After a short time on the interstate, the driver took the Thor/Freya exit.

According to witnesses on scene, the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed as he approached the traffic light at 2nd and Thor, jumped over a curb, crashed into a chain link fence, fell down an embankment before crashing into a white vehicle traveling westbound on the interstate. The black car eventually came to a stop in the median of I-90.

The driver of the black car then ran away initiating a chase. He was arrested a short time later and taken to an area hospital. It is unclear what charges the driver faces.

Officers on scene tell KHQ the driver of the white vehicle will be alright.

Officers from Spokane Valley, Spokane, Spokane County and Washington State Patrol all assisted.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
