UPDATE: Spokane Woman Given Badge For Catching Intruder

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE:

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Spokane police gave a 63-year-old woman a junior police badge for holding an intruder at gunpoint after he smashed his way into her home.

Friends of Sandra Mize told The Spokesman-Review that she's soft spoken with a friendly laugh but they wouldn't cross the grandmother of 10.

Mize keeps a gun by her bed and hadn't fired it in 30 years until early Wednesday when she found the man in her home.

She fired one shot that missed. The intruder sat down and waited while Mize called police, although he fought with officers who arrived and arrested him.

UPDATE:

SPOKANE, Wash. - The 62-year-old woman who held the burglar told KHQ she woke up to the noise of him kicking in her back door - through the dead bolt.  The noise was so loud it shook some medicine out of her cabinet in the room on the other side of the wall.

She came out of her bedroom with the gun she keeps by her bed, and told the man, "I'm armed."  She says he didn't say a word, but kept coming at her, so she backed up and fired a warning shot above the door.

At that point, the man went to her couch, where she held him at gunpoint while she called the police.  She said the man wasn't wearing a shirt, and didn't say a word during the entire ordeal.  She wasn't injured, and told KHQ she probably hasn't fired the weapon in 25 years, and joked with responding officers that her ammunition was probably older than they were.

Neighbors describe the woman as a strong, tough, independent woman who grew up in Spokane, and has lived in the neighborhood a long time.  They say they're so happy she wasn't hurt during the ordeal, and that the neighborhood has been pretty quiet - until this overnight intrusion.

The man police arrested, Sean Denny, 35, will make his first court appearance this afternoon.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

SPOKANE, Wash. - A man attempted to break into a business and then a home early Wednesday in Spokane only to be help up at gun point by the woman who lived in the home until police arrived.

Police say the man tried to break into a business at 2700 N. Pittsburg just after midnight. He smashed in the door and when he noticed that people nearby heard the commotion, he ran off.

He then attempted to break into a home on Dalton and Crestline. He kicked in the back door of the home and was met at gun point by the woman who lived in the home. She fired a warning shot and continued to hold the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.

When police arrived, the man tried to run away. Police sent k9 units after the suspect and detained him. He was arrested on multiple charges.

The suspect is currently in the hospital recovering from minor injuries.
