Walk-Off Ensures Doubleheader Split For Whitworth Softball

The Whitworth softball team walked off on the backend of a doubleheader to avoid a sweep to Willamette on Saturday at Marks Field. The Pirates dropped the first game 5-3, but Jamie Brunne hit a game-ending double in the second for a 5-4 win.

Brunne's double capped a three-run seventh inning for the Pirates. Willamette had scored two runs in the top half of the inning to take a 4-4 lead.

But Alyssa Marti hit a two-out two-run single in the bottom of the last frame to tie the contest. Brunne followed with a double to score pinch-runner Caylan Haehl.

The first game was also a close contest. Tied heading into the seventh, Willamette scored a pair to take the 5-3 win.

The teams square off tomorrow in another doubleheader at Marks Field. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m.
