PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE, Wash. - An 18-month old child who died last week at Sacred Heart Medical Center has officially been ruled a homicide according to the Spokane County medical examiner. The infant died of blunt force trauma to the head on March 31st. The child suffered a partial skull fracture.

Spokane police confirm they are investigating this case. A search warrant was served at a home in the 2000 block of West Mansfield Court. KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus spoke with the grandparents. They say its their daughter's boyfriend who is being investigated for the death and believe he is the one responsible. At this time no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.

The grandparents say the child brought a "lot of light" to the family and they are devastated after his death. Spokane police would not say if they have any suspects at this time. Police say they are interviewing individuals who may have had contact with the child. According to court documents it was the child's grandmother who noticed blood coming from the infants mouth while at a BBQ. Documents also say the grandmother noticed the baby was "Lethargic" and "unresponsive".

When officers arrived at the BBQ they described the infant as having "bruising under both cheeks" and a "a large indentation on the left side of the baby's head". The bruising appeared to be from "finger marks" court documents show.

BACKSTORY FROM COURT DOCUMENTS:

On 3/30/13 medics were called to a baby not responding and bleeding out of the mouth. The baby was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital. Members of the Spokane Police Dept. were called to the hospital. Officer Kyle Heuett took the initial report. Heuett observed bruising under both cheeks. The bruising appeared to be finger marks. Heuett also observed a large bruise on the foot and a large indentation on the left side of the baby's head. He was told by the nurse that the indentation area felt very squishy. The baby was immediately taken to surgery.

The mother and grandmother both arrived at the hospital. The paternal father is not involved with the baby. Their is a boyfriend who does not live with the mother but often stays in the home. Initial reports were that the baby had been sick for the last several days and was on a prescription antibiotic.

Court documents reveal that the family went to a barbeque. The grandmother was holding the baby and noticed it was lethargic, unresponsive and had blood coming out of his mouth. They immediately called 911.

At this point in the investigation, there have been several individuals that have cared for this child and it is unknown who caused the head injury.
