COWICHE, Wash. - The Highland School District says the gunshots near Marcus Whitman Elementary in Cowiche were just nearby target practice.
The school went into lockdown around 9:45 Wednesday morning after reports of gunshots near the east playground.
The district says staff and students responded quickly and moved into secure locations. Emergency personnel secured the buildings and perimeter, but learned the shots had been target practice on private property near the school.
The school says all the students were accounted for and safe within minutes of the lockdown call. Classes resumed as usual by 11 AM.
