Spokane's chase for the Memorial Cup came to a close on Wednesday night as the Chiefs fell to the Winterhawks 5-0 in front of 4,012 fans at the Spokane Arena. Portland defeated Spokane 4-0 in their best-of-seven series to advance to the WHL Western Conference Finals.

The loss ended an impressive year for the Chiefs, who reached the 40-win plateau for the ninth time in franchise history and qualified for the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season. Spokane finished with an overall record of 48-31-2-0 including the postseason.

Portland and Spokane traded shots for the first 10 minutes of the game before Chase De Leo put the Winterhawks on the board with a goal at the 10:53 mark. Spokane looked poised to tie the score on a power play starting at 12:28 but an errant pass from the Chiefs led to Taylor Peters' short-handed goal and a 2-0 advantage for the Winterhawks. Portland outshot Spokane 11-8 for the period

The Winterhawks notched the only goal of the second with Ty Rattie scoring on the power play at 1:42 to push Portland's lead to 3-0.  The Hawks outshot the Chiefs 15-10 in the period.

Portland added two more goals in the third, with Joey Baker scoring at 10:55 and Taylor Leier lighting the lamp at 16:31, to cap the game's scoring.

Williams finished 30 of 35 on save opportunities while Mac Carruth was 30 of 30 for Portland. Spokane went 0 for 1 on the power play and 3 of 4 on the penalty kill.

Tonight's three stars: Mac Carruth (1st), Taylor Peters (2nd) and Eric Williams (3rd).
