Shock Postgame Quotes

Head coach Andy Olson

On what win meant: We needed it more for our confidence than anything. With this young group of guys, we're still young. We got a lot of guys back from last year, but we're still young, and that's the first time that we've had to battle. That's the first time that we've had a dogfight. The response in the fourth quarter, I mean, it was just fantastic from our defense. Our pass rushers finally started to get through there. I mean, that's one of the best offensive lines we're going to see all year. There was just so much heart. I told the TVs in there, there's so much heart out here, man. I truly love my team. These guys will do anything I ask them to do. I think the sky's the limit, I think tonight we kind of showed a little bit of that.

On Erik Meyer getting hit: Got hit a lot, we got hit a lot. We definitely got to clean that up, he's not going to survive getting hit 20 times a game. He showed a lot of poise in there. He got hit just like he did last year, I didn't know if he'd get up. But he popped up, didn't affect him, didn't miss a beat. I'm proud of him for overcoming all those mental injuries he's had.

On protecting Meyer: I think our guys just realized how important it is, if we want to win this game, Erik's got to be on his feet. James Ruffin stepping out of position, coming into there at fullback. Again, I can't commend the guy enough. He's so out of position there and he's so athletic, but yet he's so tough. That's the hardest position in football ... the fullback. For him to step in there and put his head down every time, just so glad.

On the onside kick: I had planned well before the game started. I knew we were going to need to take chances to beat this team. They're the best football team in the AFL, outside of this game. I knew I was going to onside kick, I knew it was going to be in the first half. I didn't know when it was going to be, but it felt right at that time, I felt the crowd's energy. It just felt like the perfect moment.

On going for it at the end of the first half: It was a pretty long field goal. I just didn't, for some reason, I didn't feel confidence in him. I didn't. It was probably a mistake looking at hindsight. Probably should have just kicked it. Three points in this game doesn't get you a whole lot, so I just decided to go for it and felt comfortable doing that. I can't win them all, I guess.

Quarterback Erik Meyer

On the game: We knew that coming in. Arizona's a great team. Defensively, offensively, they got a lot of veterans, they play hard, they play physical. That's our mindset every game. Our offense wants to score every possession. We knew what we had coming into tonight. I just want to thank God for allowing me to keep playing this game. I want to thank my teammates, my offensive line, receivers, defense. It was a team effort tonight. We finished it.

On importance of the game: It was a very important game, obviously, divisional game, rival game. Every game is going to be important, especially in our division. We got us, Utah, San Jose and Arizona. We got the best division in the league. We know every game's important, we got to win them.

On the receivers making plays: Those guys, just sometimes there's nothing, you just throw it up to them and they go make plays. Obviously, you saw the last one to Tennell. Jorden, for being a rookie, he's really coming along, really fast. Honestly I think we have the two best receivers in the AFL.

On being pressured: Their defensive line's awesome. They've got a lot of veteran's up there and their big, their strong, their physical. I don't think we let up a sack. That's just the way it is. It's not always on the offensive line, sometimes the secondary makes plays. They covered us a few times and sometimes I got to move around, but the offensive line did a great job. I don't think we got another sack. I just want to credit them because without them, we're nothing.

On the crowd: It was awesome. It was awesome. Great crowd, they're loud and it was just a lot of fun. Obviously, a lot more fun when you come out with a win. That was good.
