SWAT Situation Ends Peacefully In Coeur d'Alene

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Police in Coeur d'Alene, including the SWAT team, were called out to an apartment complex early Saturday morning after a burglary suspect barricaded himself inside of an apartment.

It happened around 5:00am in the 4200 block of Abbey Road in Coeur d'Alene. Police say a resident of the 4-plex came home and interrupted a burglary in progress. The resident got into an altercation with the burglar and at some point, a weapon was displayed.

It was at that time the suspect fled the apartment and went to his own residence inside the same complex and a standoff with law enforcement ensued.

The suspect refused to communicate with authorities for hours, and residents in the neighborhood were evacuated.

Police received word that the suspect had his young child inside the residence with him.

Eventually the suspect, identified as 22-year-old William Velis handed over his 2-year-old to his wife, unharmed, and surrendered.

Velis was transported to the Kootenai County Jail.
