Pacific Completes Sweep of Whitworth with 6-3 Win

Posted: Updated:

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- (From Pacific Sports Information) Pacific took advantage of Whitworth miscues and Matt Delegato tossed a complete game Sunday in a 6-3 win over the visiting Pirates, completing the Northwest Conference baseball series sweep at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

Delegato settled down after allowing seven hits to the Pirates in the first three innings. He gave up just three over the final six innings and struck out seven batters in the final four frames. He improved to 6-1 on the year by allowing three runs on 10 hits with two walks and the seven strikeouts.

Whitworth (10-20-1, 5-13 NWC) made Delegato work hard over the first three innings after finding offense hard to come by on Saturday. Gerhard Muelheims led off the game with a double down the left field line and scored on a suicide squeeze. Danny Jordan led of the second with a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Motsinger.

The Boxers (12-18, 9-9 NWC) took both runs back in the home half of the second. Michael Arakaki reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Trux French. The second run scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice by Anson Arakaki (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii).

The Pirates manufactured their last run of the game in the third. Muelheims led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on Tyler Pfeffer's single to right. From that point, however, Delegato settled down to allow just three more hits and only allowed one runner past second in that stretch.

Pacific took the lead for good with a two-out rally in the fourth. French singled on a hard hit ball to shortstop with one out and moved to second on Anson Arakaki's single to right. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a balk before Donnie Bradley scored them both on a bloop single to right.

Charlie Gaff opened the sixth for the Boxers with a walk, stole second and scored on an error on Anson Arakaki's stolen base. Bradley followed with a single to right, early scoring Anson Arakaki .

Nick Scourey took the loss for Whitworth, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Bradley led Pacific offensively, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while French finished going 2 for 3 with a run and a RBI. Muelheims went 3 for 3 to pace the Pirates.

Whitworth returns home to host Willamette in a three-game series next weekend at Merkel Field.
