Security Takes Center Stage As Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure Nears

SPOKANE, Wash – The terrorist attack in Boston is definitely in the forefront of the minds of organizers putting on the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure in Spokane on Sunday.

"It absolutely has a little bit of an impact on us just in terms of making sure we let people know safety is our #1priority," said Race Chair Shae Fasbender.

Tuesday afternoon, after speaking with KHQ, Fasbender was heading into meeting with Spokane Police and the Public Facilities District to discuss safety and security issues.  She says there has always been a crisis plan in place, and this year will be no different.

The course runs right through the heart of downtown Spokane, loops into the Browne's Addition neighborhood, then back.  Organizers are hoping for 10,000 people to take part in the race to celebrate breast cancer survivors and honor those who lost their lives in the fight.

75% of the proceeds will go right back to Eastern Washington to help fund research for a cure.

"My family, including my two kids are going to be here on race day and I wouldn't be putting them in a position that wouldn't be safe," Fasbender added.
