Crimestoppers Offers Reward For Suspect; Residents Seek Out Self-Defense Courses To Feel Safe

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Coeur d'Alene detectives are asking for the public's help in finding the man that attacked a teenage girl Saturday morning around 5:30 AM. The girl was going to meet a friend for a morning run until she says she was dragged into the woods near the 1800 block of 15th Street. She was able to fight the man off and she ran to a nearby home covered in mud and partially clothed.

Crimestoppers of the Inland NW are offering a cash reward for information that leads to the man's arrest.

A girl who lives on the same block where the incident occurred spoke to KHQ Local News about how dangerous situations like this has caused her to seek out a self defense course at North Idaho College.

"It's really scary, you just never know when it's going to happen and it's completely out of nowhere, it can happen at anytime. I have trouble remembering the exact moves but I feel like if someone came and attacked me I would know at least what to do," Jordann, a freshman at the College said.

Jordann takes this free self defense class offered by Melanie Warner, who also teaches at her family's Hand to Hand Combat Training Center in Post Falls. Melanie told KHQ she has several female only classes and many come in to learn self defense for the first time. Some have previously been assaulted, some are just worried it could happen to them. She gives the women in her classes tips. She says not being distracted and looking people directly in the eye wherever you are can help to minimize a potential criminal from making someone his victim.

"It's incredibly important for women to learn how to be aware and also for them to be empowered to know that they can get out of a situation . Just because we might be known as the weaker sex, that does not mean that you have to lie down and take anything," she said.

If you have any possible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect, you are encouraged to call Crimestoppers. The suspect is said to have short red hair and possibly a goatee. He is said to be 5'5'' in height and between the ages of 20 and 30.

NOT in a microwave. For this reason a new prank-challenge going around on Facebook is resulting in some hilarious text conversations between mothers and their grown children.
