Greater Spokane League Honors 2012/13 Scholar-Athletes

The Greater Spokane League was proud to present the highest awards handed out by the league each year. Winners of GSL Scholar/Athlete Awards for 2012/13 were recognized at the annual award luncheon on Thursday at the Spokane Club in downtown Spokane. Each year the GSL recognizes students who excel in the classroom, community and athletics.  A male and female student is recognized from each school. This year's winners are:

 

Central Valley High School

 

  • Alex Moore has a 3.99 GPA and earned four varsity letters; four in cross country and three in track.   Alex will attend Purdue University to study Electrical Engineering in their Honors College. 

 

  • Austin Rehkow has a 3.87 gpa and earned nine varsity letters, four in football, three in basketball and two in track.  Austin will attend the University of Idaho on a football scholarship.

 

Ferris High School

  • Abby Liss has a 3.79 gpa and earned nine varsity letters; two in soccer, three in basketball & four in track.   Abby will attend Western Washington University.

 

  • Travis Thorne has a 3.99 GPA and earned eight varsity letters; four in cross country and four in track.  Travis will attend the University of Arizona where he will compete in Cross Country and Track & Field. 

 

Gonzaga Prep High School

 

  • Clare Cozza has a 3.75gpa and earned seven varsity letters; 3 in soccer, 1 in basketball and 3 in track and field.  Clare will attend either Creighton University where she was awarded a merit scholarship or Gonzaga University where she also was awarded a merit scholarship.

 

  • Jacob Groh has a 3.87gpa and earned seven varsity letter; 2 in cross country, 2 in basketball and 3 in soccer.  Jacob will study health science at Carroll College.  He received an Army ROTC Scholarship & the Carroll College Presidential Scholarship.

 

Lewis & Clark High School

 

  • Natalie Hoogner has a 4.0 gpa and earned five varsity athletic letters:  3 in fast pitch softball and 2 in slow pitch softball.  Natalie will be attending Washington State University to pursue a B.A. and master's degree in speech pathology.  She has received the WSU University Achievement Award.

 

  • Brennan Schon earned a 3.5 gpa and earned nine varsity letters:  3 in football, 2 in basketball and 4 in track.  Brennan will attend either Puget Sound or Whitworth and participate in both football and track.  He was awarded a Puget Sound Alumni Academic scholarship and a LAR scholarship from the University of Montana

 

Mead High School

  • Mackenzie McPhee has a 3.98 gpa and earned seven varsity letters; four in basketball and three in volleyball.  Mackenzie will study neuroscience as a pre-med student at Regis University in Denver Colorado where she will be a scholarship basketball player.

 

  • Langston Ward has a 3.91gpa and earned six varsity letters; 3 in football and 3 in track & field.  Langston will study political science at Harvard University on an academic scholarship while playing football.

 

Mt. Spokane High School

 

  • Alyssa Lloyd has a 3.95 gpa and earned nine varsity letters; 4 in soccer, twice serving as team captain, and 4 in basketball and one in track. Alyssa will attend the University of Idaho Majoring in Exercise Science and Health on a soccer scholarship.

 

  • Dane Larson has a 4.0 gpa and earned nine varsity letters; three in cross country, two in basketball and four in track.  Dane will attend Whitworth University where he is a Presidential Scholarship Recipient.

 

North Central High School

 

  • Katie Knight has a 4.0 gpa and earned eight varsity letters; four in cross country and four in track, also a track captain.   Katie will attend the University of Washington in the fall on a full ride track/cross country scholarship.  She will pursue an engineering degree.

 

  • Dan Whittaker has a 4.0 gpa, a Valedictorian and earned four varsity letters; all in baseball.  Dan will attend the University of Portland as a Chemistry/Pre-Dental major on a baseball scholarship.  He was awarded an academic 4 year $72,000 "Presidential Scholarship" from the University of Portland.

Rogers High School

 

  • Alison Olsen has a 3.33 gpa and earned eight varsity letters; four in slow pitch softball and four in fast pitch softball.  Alison will be attending Washington State University this fall.   She plans to major in nursing with a focus on Neo-Natal care. 

 

  • Carson Murray has a 3.644 gpa and earned six varsity letters; 4 in Track and Field, serving 2 years as a team captain and 2 letters in basketball.  Carson is undecided on where he will be attending college and has been accepted to the University of Washington, St. John's University, and is on the wait list for Georgetown University.  He received a $1000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship and is a finalist for the Gates Millennium Scholarship.

 

Shadle Park High School

 

  • Kaycee Hert has a 3.6 gpa and earned six varsity letters; 4 in soccer and 2 in basketball.  Kaycee will study neuroscience at Regis University while playing basketball.

 

  • Hunter Croft has a 3.77 gpa and earned eight varsity letters; four in cross country and four in track.  Hunter will attend Boise Bible College beginning this fall.

 

University High School

 

  • Kayleigh Valley has a 3.71 gpa and earned eight varsity letters; 4 in volleyball and 4 in basketball.  Kaylee will attend the University of Montana on a full ride basketball scholarship. She will study to become a Physical Therapist.

 

  • Brett Bailey has a 3.86 gpa and earned four varsity letters; all in basketball.  Brett will attend the University of San Diego this fall.
