Horse Racing Season Begins In Tri-Cities

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Sundowns horse racing begins Saturday at the Benton County Fairgrounds. It's the 26th year of racing at the fairgrounds. The spring races go for three weeks, wrapping up May 5th, the day after the Kentucky Derby. Horse racing is not as popular as it once was but Sundowns expects a good crowd. Especially since there isn't another race track on this side of the state.

"Quarter horses can't run on a recognized track until April 1st so we're one of the first places in America that has a futurity this early, we're the only game in town now. Actually us and Emerald Downs start this weekend but we're the only game in the Northwest right now. We run a race every 25 minutes, but there's a lot of stuff to do in between. The horses walk over to the paddock, it's good to go to the paddock, look at them, watch them get saddled," said Shorty Martin, Sundowns racing secretary.
