UPDATE FROM THE SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: The deceased individual is an adult male and was released to the Medical Examiner's Office early Monday morning. They will identify the subject after an autopsy. The scene is still active as Sheriff's Office Investigative Support Unit (ISU) detectives are processing a marijuana growing operation located inside the residence.  Craig.

Spokane County Sheriff's Department Press Release:

On Sunday evening, April 21, 2013, at 6:00 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the 4500 block of East Sumac Drive on a drug call.  A locksmith had been at the residence, which is in foreclosure, changing locks when he smelled marijuana. Thinking there may be an illicit marijuana grow in the residence, and noticing there was a vehicle parked in the garage, the locksmith left the residence and contacted the realtor.

Knowing the house was supposed to be vacant, the realtor contacted Crime Check to report the incident. Deputies arrived on scene and found an unsecured sliding glass door in the back of the residence. Once opened, deputies announced their presence from the back porch.  Deputies heard a response from inside the residence followed by what they believed to be a muffled gunshot. Deputies backed away from the residence, secured the area and the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team was called to the scene.

A search warrant for the residence was signed and when SWAT served the warrant, they located a deceased man inside the residence, along with a possible illicit marijuana growing operation. Detectives responded to the scene and are conducting their investigation.  The Medical Examiner's Office will provide identification of the deceased at a later time.

At this time, the house is locked down so investigative support can process small marijuana grow operations.
