Crime Tracker: Adding Extra Security To Your Windows

SPOKANE, Wash. - Windows provide a weak link to home security.  With warmer weather moving in, it's especially important we secure our windows to keep potential intruders out of our home.  Locking your windows is the first step, but the following tips add extra security.

1: Use a dowel pin in the window track to keep horizontal sliding windows from opening.  Cutting the dowel/rod shorter than the track allows you to crack the window but keeps it from being completely slid open.

2: Drill screws into upper track of the window into the studs of the home.  The screws will help keep intruders from lifting the entire window frame out of the window space.

3: Use curtains that allow you to see out and keep the intruder from seeing inside.  Sheer windows or blinds with slats work well.

4: Apply screens to your windows.  Although they can be popped off or even cut, they still provide an extra layer of security between the inside of your house and someone on the outside.

5: Plant sharp shrubs under your window.  They'll keep a potential intruder from getting too close to your house.  However, do not let shrubbery overgrow.  Large bushes can provide a place for intruders to hide and give them cover as they try to get inside.

6: Gravel also works as a security measure.  It's loud when walked on and can give warning to homeowners that someone is near a window.

And of course, remember to always lock your window.  It's easy to forget during the Spring months as we slide them open for fresh air, but a lock is one of your best bets in keeping the bad guys out of your home.
