Breaking Down The GSL Baseball Standings

Updated:

It was an important week for GSL baseball, in terms of the standings. With many of the top teams facing each other, there is now a bit of clarity at the top of the league.

What we know with two weeks left in the season is that Gonzaga Prep has asserted itself as the best team in the GSL. The Bullpups scored a combined 30 runs against previously second-place Mead.

The Panthers slipped to fourth after being swept. But they have a good schedule the remainder of the regular season, facing Ferris (a team ahead of them in the standings) and a woeful North Central team.

Meanwhile, Ferris had to beat Mt. Spokane on Thursday in order to remain within distance of first place. The Saxons did just that, using a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning of a 5-4 win.

"We're right in the middle of it, we have a huge series with Mead coming up.," Ferris head coach Jim Sharkey said after the game. "That's kind of everything right now. We have four games left against the 4A opponents. This game we needed to keep us kind of in it. A loss would have been tough."

Ferris has an undeniably tough schedule the last two weeks of the regular season. After a pair of games against Mead next week, they'll close out the conference slate with a couple games against Gonzaga Prep.

That also means that the Saxons essentially control their own destiny, though. They go on a roll and beat the Bullpups twice (and get help from another team knocking off the league leaders), and all of a sudden Ferris is the GSL champs.

You also can't forget Mt. Spokane, which faces two sub-.500 teams to close out its GSL schedule. While the Wildcats don't control their own destiny, they can make a move by taking care of business.

Here's a look at the top half of the GSL standings.

This lengthy build-up leads me to one sincere question: Did the 2001 season doom the Seattle Mariners franchise? If the M's had won the World Series that year, would we be talking about a dynasty? Out of the Park Baseball 15 allows baseball fans to answer that question.
