SPOKANE, Wash. Behind Caleb Wood's second homerun of the season and a strong outing from Marco Gonzales, the 22nd-ranked Gonzaga University shook its three game losing skid and beat BYU 6-4 at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field Thursday. Gonzales picked up his sixth win of the season by hurling eight innings and allowing four runs.

The Bulldogs move to 27-13-1 overall and continue to hold the top spot in the West Coast Conference standings at 14-5. The Cougars drop to 20-16 overall and 7-6 WCC.

Both sides scored in the third inning. BYU's run came on an Adam Law single to right field while GU scored on Wood's homerun to left. Wood is the first Bulldog to homer in back-to-back games this season and has two in his young career.

The Zags took a 3-1 lead in the fourth with a timely hit from Travis Forbes. After Gonzales singled to open the inning and Alex Bonczyk reached by getting hit by a pitch, Forbes crushed double to right field to earn his 27th and 28th RBI of the season.

After adding another in the sixth inning, the Zags took advance of a Jacob Hannemann error in center field to bring home another insurance run.

Gonzales (6-2) went eight innings and held the Cougars to seven hits and a run through seven. However, as Gonzales pitch count neared 120, the BYU bats came alive with three runs on four hits in the eighth. Jaycob Brugman tripled down the right field line scoring a pair of Cougars. Brugman later scored on Brock Whitney single, but Gonzales did not allow BYU to extend the damage by getting two fly outs to end the inning.

Gonzales opponent Desmond Poulson (5-1) picked up his first loss of the season and went 5.1 innings and was responsible for four runs on five hits.

Arturo Reyes took over in the ninth and retired BYU in order. Reyes struck out Hannemann to earn his third save of the season.

Gonzaga and BYU will have game two of its WCC series Friday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
