WSU Drops Pac-12 Contest In Extras

PULLMAN, Wash. – Shane Zeile's RBI-single in the top of the 11th inning lifted No. 7 UCLA to a 7-6 victory over Washington State in Pac-12 Conference baseball, Friday night.

Zeile's game-winner came off Washington State (19-19, 6-10 Pac-12) reliever Chris McDowell, who took over for Jason Monda (2-1) earlier in the inning. The hit made a winner out of David Berg (5-0), the fourth UCLA (26-12, 10-6 Pac-12) pitcher.

"We dug ourselves a hole early," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Give our guys credit for battling back, but we didn't play good baseball."

The Bruins took a 5-0 lead after 3 1/2 inning, aided by three Washington State errors, against Cougar starter Joe Pistorese.

Washington State picked up its first run on Austin Pernell's RBI-fielder's choice in the fourth and added a run on Yale Rosen's run-scoring double in the fifth.

In the sixth, Shea Donlin led off with a double and Pernell bunted for a hit to put runners the corners and finish UCLA starter Adam Plutko's night. A wild pitch by Bruin reliever James Kaprielian allowed Donlin to score and Pernell advanced to third on a ground out by Trace Tam Sing. Trek Stemp plated Pernell with a single to bring the Cougars within a run at 5-4.

Collin Slaybaugh bounced into a force out to erase Stemp. Slaybaugh then advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third on a balk. Adam Nelubowich followed with an infield single, one of a career-high five hits, to score Slaybaugh with the tying run.

UCLA took the lead in the seventh when J.D. Leckenby allowed an inherited runner to score. In the bottom of the eighth, Stemp singled with one out against Zack Weiss and Slaybaugh singled off Berg to put runners at the corners. Nelubowich followed with a single to tie the game 6-6.

The series continues, Saturday at 2 p.m.
