PULLMAN, Wash. – Nick Vander Tuig struck out eight in a complete game victory and No. 7 UCLA defeated Washington State 10-1 in Pac-12 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

Vander Tuig (7-3) carried a shutout into the ninth inning before Ian Sagdal spoiled the bid with a run-scoring single. The UCLA (27-12, 11-6 Pac-12) right hander gave up seven hits and did not walk a batter.

"We fell behind early and against Vander Tuig, you are asking a lot to come back," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We have not played clean baseball defensively for a while and that has hurt us."

The Bruins scored four times in the first and added two runs in the second against Washington State (19-20, 6-11 Pac-12) starter Tanner Chleborad (3-7). UCLA tacked on one in the fourth to chase Chleborad and put two on the board in the fifth against Cougar reliever Sean Hartnett.

The Bruins' final run was their third unearned tally of the game and came in the eighth inning against Matt Bower. In the ninth, Patrick McGrath led off with a single for the Cougars and Matt Mendenhall singled with out to put runners at the corners. With two outs, Sagdal bounced a single through the right side to plate McGrath.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
