Previous Coverage:

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE VALLEY POLICE DEPT: On Monday morning, April 29, 2013, at 6:00 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one-vehicle collision at Mission and Felts.

When Deputy Jerad Kiehn and Deputy Ken Dodge arrived on scene, they found the engine compartment of the vehicle on fire and the adult male driver trapped inside the vehicle.

Unable to remove the driver from the vehicle, Deputies Kiehn and Dodge used several fire extinguishers to keep the flames from the engine compartment away from the driver. Valley Fire personnel arrived on scene, extinguished the fire and had to extract the driver from the vehicle.

Sheriff's Office collision investigators investigated the collision.  The vehicle had been traveling eastbound on Mission, swerved across the westbound lane of traffic and struck a large tree head-on. According to investigators, the driver was transported to a local hospital and was initially listed in critical condition. He has since succumbed to his injuries.  Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this collision.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office will release identity of the driver at a later time.

PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A single vehicle crash at Mission and Felts has put one man in the hospital. Just after 6am Monday morning a car traveling east bound on Mission veered off the roadway across oncoming traffic and hit a tree.

The vehicle then caught fire. Fire crews who first responded to the scene were unable to get the man out of the vehicle because the engine block was in his lap. While they waited for more crews to arrive so they could extricate the driver, they used five fire extinguishers to keep the flames away from the man.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is now in critical condition.

Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor.

Mission is currently blocked from University to Felts and drivers are being advised to avoid the area for a couple hours.
