Spokane County Sheriff's Office Press Release:

On Monday, April 29, 2013, Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a vehicle/bicycle collision at Hawthorne and Whittier. At about 4:45 p.m., 911 received a call that a bicyclist had been hit by a vehicle and was lying on the street.

Deputies arrived to find a 15-year-old male on Hawthorne with compound fractures to his left leg.  According to witnesses, the bicyclist rode his bike northbound across Hawthorne right in front of a SUV traveling eastbound. The bicyclist rode in front of a truck that was legally parked on Hawthorne and was struck by the SUV.  There was no impairment involved in the collision and the driver of the SUV was not cited.

Sheriff's Office Collision Investigators responded and closed Hawthorne Road for about an hour and a half. The bicycle rider was transported to a local hospital.

With summer time approaching, the Sheriff's Office would like to remind motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to follow the rules of the road. Bicycle riders can ride in the lane of travel in Spokane County but must obey all rules of the road like a vehicle. When crossing the street where there are no pedestrian control devices, bicyclists and pedestrians have to make sure there is a natural, safe void in traffic before crossing.
