KENNEWICK, Wash. - Kennewick boys soccer shows they can win on the field, but coaches are more proud about their performances off the field. Shaun Sheddy has more on the lions' work ethic.

Administrators and coaches estimate over 80 percent of the boys on the Kennewick soccer team have difficult home lives and are involved in free and reduced lunch programs.

"A lot of these kids have to work to help out family. To a certain extent it affects their studies because they're torn, not only trying to be a full time student and a student athlete, but also trying to work to help out the family and sometimes the studies struggle as well," said Brian Grochoel, Kennewick soccer head coach.

"I have a job, I work at Life Quest and my grades right now aren't looking bad, their not looking good. So for me it's hard, it's really hard keeping up with the other subjects," said Sam Borja, Kennewick Jr. midfielder.

But Coach Gochoel knows soccer will actually help the boys' grades.

"I know for certain those student athletes that participate are much more likely to come to school, stay in school, and succeed in school," said Goechel.

"Like I have a job right, so it's hard you have to know how to manage your time more. But when your schedule is real busy you will always find ways to use your time," said Henry Hernandez, Kennewick Jr. Goalkeeper.

And the results speak for themselves.

"In the case of our program out team G.P.A. has increased every year since I've been here, this being my third year," said Gochoel.
