Academic All-Star: Susan Routson of Umatilla High School

UMATILLA, Ore. -- Umatilla High School senior Susan Routson sits at the top of her class with a 4.0 GPA. 

"I guess it comes down to will power. Do you really want it? Picking stuff over other stuff, like doing homework first then watching TV next," Susan said.

The tennis and soccer player is involved with Students Today Leaders Tomorrow, Key Club and her church. 

"Whatever she does, she tries really hard at it. She's kind of bull-headed. She has really strong will power. So she just keeps working at it, working at it," said John Routson, Susan's older brother and volunteer Umatilla tennis coach.

Routson plans to study elementary education at BYU Provo.

"I love little kids. They're so cute. Every day is different. I feel like teaching little kids, you start young, so you're able to influence them from a young age," Susan said.

Routson can generate laughs, As her brother recalls, telling stories.

"As we're walking away off the tennis courts, the sprinklers turn on. She jumped back probably 10 feel carrying all her tennis gear, tennis balls. She just jumps back when the sprinkles turned on," John laughed.
