Idaho Car Theft Suspect Rescinds Guilty Pleas

SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) - A northern Idaho man charged with possessing methamphetamine and stolen vehicles has rescinded his guilty pleas in connection with his 2011 criminal case.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports (http://bit.ly/YjE2Iv) 51-year-old Dennis Hiebert withdrew his conditional pleas last month after a judge rejected terms of a plea agreement reached with prosecutors.

Hiebert was charged with seven counts of grand theft and drug possession for allegedly having meth and two stolen vehicles at a wrecking business he operates.

Defense attorneys proposed Hiebert plead guilty to three theft counts, plus the drug charge - in exchange, he would serve a suspended prison term, probation and pay $13,000 in restitution.

Citing Hiebert's prior criminal record, Judge John Mitchell quashed that plan, recommending Hiebert serve up to one year in prison before probation.
