Whitworth Drops Double-Header to End Season

LEWISTON, Idaho – The final day of the Whitworth baseball season was a challenging one for the Pirates and it showed on the scoreboard. Whitworth dropped a 14-5 decision to top-ranked Linfield then fell 20-9 to NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State College on the second day of competition at the Inland Cellular Invitational.

The Pirates finish the season 14-25-1.

Game 1 – Linfield 14, Whitworth 5

The Wildcats jumped to an 11-0 lead over the first four innings and cruised to the victory.

The Pirates finally got to Linfield starting pitcher Zach Brandon in the bottom of the fourth when Gerhard Muelheims scored on Thomas Wakem's fielder's choice. Blake Thoren added an RBI single for the second run of the inning, cutting the deficit to 11-2.

Whitworth got three more in the fifth. Nick Motsinger had an RBI double, followed by a run-scoring double from Josh Davis. Muelheims drove in Davis with a single to left that pulled the Bucs within 11-5.

But Linfield kept Whitworth at bay by adding on single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings.

Motsinger finished 3-4 with an RBI and run scored. Davis, Muelheims and Thoren all had a pair of hits for Whitworth. Tim Wilson and Nick Fisher each drove in three runs for Linfield and Fisher led the Wildcats with four hits.

Nick Scourey (2-6) gave up 11 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits over 3.0 innings. Michael Renner threw four full innings of relief and allowed one run on six hits. Danny Jordan tossed the final two innings and the Cats touched him for two runs on four hits.

Brandon improved to 7-2 despite allowing five runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings. Justin Huckins finished up with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Linfield finishes the regular season 34-6 heading into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Game 2 – Lewis-Clark St. 20, Whitworth 9 Eric Peterson went 4-5 and drove in six runs, including a three-run homer, to lead the Warriors past the Pirates in the regular season finale for both squads.

LCSC scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and had 13 runs through four innings.

Whitworth rallied to pull within 13-8 after putting up three in the fourth and three more in the fifth. But the Warriors put the game away with four in the seventh and three final runs in the eighth.

Muelheims went 4-6 to lead the Pirates at the plate and scored two runs. Danny Jordan led the Bucs with three RBIs and Motsinger drove in a pair.

Spencer Ansett started for Whitworth and allowed 12 runs (only three earned) on nine hits over 3.1 innings. Taylor Isadore worked the next three and gave up four runs on six hits. Michael Woodkey was touched for four runs on four hits over 1.0 innings and Jason Renner pitched the final 0.2 of an inning.

Steve Thompson started for LCSC, leading off a group of five Warrior pitchers. He allowed five runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings. Colton Wright was credited with the win after he threw the seventh and eighth frames.

LCSC finishes the regular season 41-13 heading into the NAIA World Series in three weeks at Harris Field.
