COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Washington State freshman guard Lia Galdeira has been selected to attend the 2013 National Team Trials and tryout for the FIBA U19 World Championship Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. May 16-19, USA Basketball announced Tuesday.

Galdeira is one of 34 players from throughout the country who received and accepted invitations. Trials to select the 12-member USA squad will be held May 16-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. Invitations to the trials were issued by the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee. Eligible athletes must be United State citizens born on or after Jan. 1, 1994.

"I am very excited and proud to represent both Washington State and our country while playing with and against some of the best players in the world," Galdeira said.

Galdeira, a native of Kamuela, Hawaii, earned All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention, All-Defensive Team honorable mention and All-Freshman Team honors after leading the Cougars in scoring (14.8 ppg), rebounding (5.2 rpg), steals (86) and made 3-pointers (41). Galdeira led all Pac-12 freshmen in scoring and was the second-leading freshman scorer in the country. She led the Cougars in scoring 21 times including four 20-point games and two double-doubles.

"We are very excited for Lia to receive this great opportunity to showcase her talents against some of the best players in the country and in the world," Cougar head coach June Daugherty stated. "There is nothing better than having the opportunity to represent our country and we are very proud of Lia to receive this honor. She has worked to improve her game and she has earned this opportunity to participate in the highest level of amateur basketball."

Galdeira is the first Cougar to receive a national team invite since Camille Thompson played for the Canadian National Team in the 1993 World Championships. The 5-11 guard is one of three players from the Pac-12 Conference, joining Jordan Adams of USC and Jillian Alleyne of Oregon.

The USA squad, which is on a quest to capture a fifth-consecutive gold medal at the U19 Worlds, will compete in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, hosted by Lithuania from July 18-28 in Klaipeda and Panevezys. The team will regroup for training on July 1 at the USOTC prior to traveling to Europe for the competition. Katie Meier of the University of Miami will be the head coach and she will be assisted by Nikki Caldwell of LSU and Kelly Graves of Gonzaga University.
