Mariners Option Montero, Reportedly Promote Sucre

Updated:

The Mariners announced on Thursday that they have optioned catcher Jesus Montero to Triple-A Tacoma. A corresponding move will be made Friday.

Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News-Tribune reported the move first and said that the Mariners will be selecting the contract of Tacoma catcher Jesus Sucre.

Montero, 23, was the centerpiece of last offseason's trade with the Yankees, when the Mariners sent pitcher Michael Pineda to New York. After a decent first season with the Mariners in 2012, Montero has struggled at the plate this year. He has hit just .208 (21-for-101) with 21 strikeouts and only five extra base hits.

Sucre, 25, has never appeared in a Major League game. He is hitting .302 for Tacoma this season, but is known more for his defense.
