3 Rescued After Boat Capsizes On Pend Oreille River
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE PEND OREILLE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: On Sunday, May 26, 2013, just after 0900 hours the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office received a report of a boat that had capsized on the Pend Oreille River.
It was reported that an aluminum canoe occupied by 3 people had just gone over the falls North of Metaline and the occupants had been thrown into the water. The steep and narrow canyon walls, as well as the high water levels, can make this a very dangerous part of the river.
Rescue crews from the Sheriff's Office, Boundary Dam, the Public Utility District, and the U.S. Border Patrol responded to the area.
At around 1000 hours the Sheriff's Office was advised by a citizen that all 3 of the boats occupants had been able to get themselves out of the water and were safely on shore. The rescue boat from Boundary Dam was able to pick up the canoeists and transported them to waiting medical crews.
18-year-old Nicholas Geoppo of Colbert was treated for mild hypothermia and released. 18 year old Alexandra Wert of Cheney, and a 17 year old female from Spokane declined medical attention and were released from the scene. The fact that they were all wearing life jackets during the incident contributed to their successful rescue.
