Season Comes To A Close For Gonzaga Baseball

Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – For the fourth consecutive year the Gonzaga Bulldogs baseball team will not be moving on to the NCAA tournament. The NCAA announced the field Monday with Gonzaga not earning an at-large bid.

Gonzaga was ranked in the top 25 at times during the season, but the Bulldogs closed out the year with seven straight losses. Their last two losses came in the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championships, where the top-seeded Bulldogs fell to San Francisco and BYU, 8-5 and 8-1, respectively.

The Bulldogs finish the year with a record of 32-21-1.

San Francisco's run in the WCC Championships helped it earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The Dons are joined by San Diego, who earned the automatic bid as winners of the conference tournament. The WCC is sending multiple teams to the NCAAs for the second straight year.

As for Gonzaga, the end of its year also marks the end of college careers for seven seniors, including WCC Pitcher of the Year Tyler Olson.

Here's the list of seniors:

  • Infielder Steven Halcomb
  • Infielder Clayton Eslick
  • Outfielder Billy Moon
  • Pitcher Tyler Olson
  • Catcher Travis Forbes
  • Outfielder Alex Bonczyk
  • Picher Karl Myers

There's speculation that junior pitcher and first baseman Marco Gonzales could leave early for the MLB draft this year, but there has been no official announcement.. Gonzales is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Awards.
