Pitching On

Updated:

- Washington State's Jason Monda was selected in the sixth round (181st overall) of the MLB first-year player draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Monda, a junior from Olympia, Wash., pitched and played outfield for the Cougars and was named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year watch list. The Phillies drafted him as an outfielder.

Monda hit .294 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs this season.

Here is what MLB.com has to say about Monda:

"Monda is a projectable college outfielder who hits for average and should add power down the line. Monda, out of Washington State, has shown that he can handle center but might have to move to a corner as he fills out, a place where his glove could be plus. He has average speed on the basepaths but possesses great instincts that allow his speed to play up. If Monda can add power, then he could become a solid everyday player in the Majors."

- Gonzaga left-hander Tyler Olson was selected in the seventh round by the Seattle Mariners. Olson, 24, is a local product out of University High School. The lefty went 9-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 101 2/3 innings. In 14 starts, Olson tossed five complete games.

- Wenatchee High School right-hander Dustin Driver was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round. Driver is committed to play for UCLA next season.

- Former Washington State pitcher Taylor Williams was selected in the fourth round (122nd overall) by the Brewers. Williams played for the Cougars for one season before transferring to Mt. Hood Community College and then to Kent State.

- Lewis-Clark State commit Elliot Morris was selected in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander just finished his sophomore season at Pierce College in Lakewood, Wash., and missed last year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
