Indians Announce Early Roster Moves

Spokane, WA – The Texas Rangers assigned 20 players from extended Spring Training to the Spokane Indians for the beginning of the Northwest League season which opens Friday, June 14th at Avista Stadium.

Among the 20 players, half of them return from last year's team: pitchers Richard Alvarez, Eric Brooks, Abel De Los Santos, and Josh McElwee, outfielders Christopher Garia, Saquan Johnson and Hirotoshi Onaka, infielders Cam Schiller and Gabriel Roa, and catcher Brandon Garcia. Schiller was college teammates with the Texas Rangers 2013 first-round pick Alex Gonzalez at Oral Roberts University.

Last season, Onaka players in 23 games for the Indians, posting a .333 batting average and an on-base percentage of .443. Alvarez tossed 48.1 innings, keeping his ERA at a solid 2.61 with 40 strikeouts.

Newcomers include pitchers Alex De La Cruz, Yohander Mendez, Ryne Slack, Collin Wiles, Mike Zouzalik, and Kyle Castro, outfielder Jamie Jarmon, and infielders Janluis Castro, Alberto Truinfel and Will Ireton.

Wiles, the Texas Rangers 2012 first-round pick, is a right hander out of Overland Park, Kan., and will make his Single-A baseball debt in Spokane. Jarmon, the 2011 Delaware High School Football Player of the Year will roam the outfield at Avista Stadium after being drafted in the second round of 2012. Kyle Castro was a second-round pick in 2011.

Players from the 2013 MLB Draft, which concluded Saturday, will fill out the remaining roster spots. Names will be announced shortly.

Fans will have their first chance to meet the 2013 Spokane Indians during the Player Welcome Party on Tuesday, June 11th from 5:30-7:30 PM at the MAX Restaurant inside the Mirabeau Park Hotel.
