Spokane Construction Company Wins Bid To Replace Collapsed I-5 Bridge

SPOKANE, Wash – Max J. Kuney Construction Company is smiling a little brighter tonight, after Governor Jay Inslee made the announcement Tuesday afternoon that the Spokane-based company would build the new replacement bridge over the Skagit River.

After the existing bridge in Mt. Vernon collapsed in late May, WSDOT issued an emergency shortlist of five contractors. Max Kuney told KHQ just to be on that list was an honor. His company was one of four that ended up submitting bids.

"This has been an exciting project," Kuney told KHQ. "They don't usually come around this fast, but it's been a hectic couple of weeks putting together a team, and everybody's been putting a lot of hours in coming up with a plan."

The winning bid is roughly $7 million dollars. The final design has not been chosen, but Kuney said the new bridge will look different than the old. The bridge that collapsed had a steel truss over the roadway, but Kuney said that would take too much time to duplicate. The new design will be a pre-cast girder span that will be built over the summer right next to the temporary bridge in place, and then will be slid into its permanent position.

Kuney said the company isn't allowed to shut down I-5 to move the permanent bridge into position until September 4th, so that's the earliest the project could be completed.

There's no word yet how many jobs may be created during the construction and implementation of the new span.
