Son Narrowly Survives Hit-and-Run; Family Seeks Answers

DEER PARK, Wash – A Deer Park family is asking for help after they say their 21-year-old son was hit by a truck and left for dead. The driver has yet to come forward and the family wants answers.

"It's terrifying when you hear your son was in an accident and in the ICU," his mother Rose Cummings said. "Anything goes through your mind."

The accident happened off Dalton Road north of town around 2 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, June 9th. Their son, who asked not to be named, was at a graduation party in Deer Park and stepped outside into a field behind a house.

But he never came back in.

A while later, his friends found him there and moved him twice before realizing he was bleeding from the head. They called an ambulance and he was rushed to Sacred Heart, where he spent nearly a week in the ICU.

His neck, back and hip were broken, along with his pelvis in three places. He underwent two surgeries, and was moved to St. Luke's Rehabilitation Hospital after a week.

While he still has to wear a neck brace, he can talk and is able to put weight on his left leg.

His story of recovery is miraculous: his neck injury was millimeters away from leaving him paralyzed or even dead. On top of that, with all of his injuries, he was left with only a 0.1% chance of making a full recovery. Against all odds, it appears he will do just that, although it may take six months.

Every step of the way, his parents have been left wondering why the driver of the truck that hit him never stopped.

"We just want people to know, if they know anything, just step forward, it's okay," Loren Cummings, his father, told KHQ. "As parents, we just want to know what happened to our son."

Rose and Loren say accidents happen, but when they do, you need to come forward. Whoever is responsible may have been driving a blue Chevy Blazer. If you saw or know anything that can help, call police.

Their son is expected to be discharged from St. Luke's Wednesday, to begin his long road to recovery.
