Power Propels Pirates Over Mariners

Starling Marte hit two home runs and a triple to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 9-4 win over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on Tuesday.

Brandon Inge also hit a home run, double and drove in three runs for the Pirates, who broke the game open with a five-run second inning to chase Mariners starter Joe Saunders.

Saunders allowed six runs on six hits and a walk, including back-to-back home runs to Inge and Marte in the second.

Blake Beavan and Tom Wilhelmsen combined to allow just one run in 5 1/3 innings of relief, but Carter Capps allowed two runs in the final two frames.

Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Mariners.

Jeff Locke threw seven innings of two-run ball for the win.
