Guess What Made The Top 10 Smartest Cities In The Country? - Spokane, North Idaho News & Weather KHQ.com

List Reveals The Smartest Cities In The Country And You Won't Believe What Made The Top 10!

Posted: Updated:

Daily Mail - Ithaca in upstate New York was honored as the smartest city in America after a lengthy study that used brain games to evaluate the intelligence of people across the country.

State College, Pennsylvania came in second place and Lafayette, Indiana in third.

Luminosity, a company that developed the test for the study, came up with five different types of mind games that they feel determines a person's level of intellect.

They then asked more than three million people between the ages of 15 and 85 years old to play at least one game from five different testing groups.

The games were split into the categories of memory, flexibility, processing speed, attention and problem solving.

According to Venture Beat, the analysts discovered that the highest scoring cities were ones where there are major research universities.

Ithaca is home to Cornell University, Penn State University is in State College and Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Making a connection between the presence of smart people near colleges is not the most outlandish of assumptions, but the researchers assert that there is actually a scientific explanation.

'Neuroscience research has found that those who are engaged in learning and cognitively stimulating activities throughout the lifetime build up a ‘cognitive reserve' that helps maintain and improve cognitive performance,' Luminosity's data scientist Daniel Sternberg said.

Another surprise that comes from the lengthy list is that most of the country's biggest cities have made the cut.

New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston and Chicago were not on the list.

The areas of greater Boston and Seattle were the only ones that were included.
