UPDATE: White Powder Sends Airway Heights Corrections Center Into Lock Down

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. -

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE AIRWAY HEIGHTS FIRE DEPT: At approximately 11:55 on Thursday morning crews from Airway Heights Fire Department, Airway Heights Police Department, Spokane County Fire District 10, and City of Spokane Hazmat responded to a suspicious package with a white substance in a small package. 

The package was discovered by a guard and called in to 911. When crews arrived the area was isolated until the hazmat team arrived. At approx 2:00 pm the hazmat team made entry to the building where the small package was located.

The substance was tested for radiation and illegal drugs. The substance was found harmless and believed to be some type of talcum powder. There were no injuries or additional circumstances to report. The scene was turned back over to the correctional staff

A unified command was set up and all agencies involved worked together as one team.

UPDATE: The Airway Heights fire department tells us the "suspicious substance" at the Airway Heights Corrections center was talcum or baby powder, nothing harmful. The facility was locked down while crews investigated. Operations are now back to normal.

KHQ.COM - On Thursday an employee came across a package inside the Airway Heights Corrections Center around 12:00. The package had "suspicious white powder" inside. This resulted in a full response hazmat situation.

Hazmat has not determined what the white powder is and they are currently investigating.
