NHL Draft: Kichton Drafted by Winnipeg Jets

NEWARK, N.J. -- Four WHL defensemen were selected in the first 18 picks of the 2013 NHL Draft, but none of those players were named Brenden Kichton. Instead, Kichton hearing his name called in the 7th round by the Winnipeg Jets. He was the 190th overall selection.

It's a stunning turn of events for the former Spokane Chief, who had a breakout season as an overage player last season, leading all Western Hockey League defensemen with 85 points in 71 games.  He was a 5th round draftee of the New York Islanders in 2011, but the two sides failed to come to an agreement by May 31, making Kichton eligible for this year's draft.  The prevailing wisdom was that Kichton would go higher in this year's draft.
