Stevens Set To End Celtics Woes

Posted: Updated:

Last week was not a good one for Boston's professional sports teams.

The Bruins gave up a 2-1 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals en route to awarding the Blackhawks with their second championship in three years.

The Red Sox are leading the AL East but in the eyes of most New Englanders, if the Sox come out with anything less than a World Series win, the season is all but a success.

And to put the cherry on top of the sundae of sports suffering, the Celtics traded their two cornerstone franchise players, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, to Brooklyn and their do-it-all coach Doc Rivers has scurried off to the West Coast.

However, with a surprise move on Wednesday, the Celtics shed a ray of hope upon their club when they hired Butler men's basketball coach Brad Stevens. The 36-year-old Stevens takes Orlando Magic coach Jacque Vaughn's place as the youngest NBA coach in the league.

But don't correlate his age with lack of coaching wisdom.

In just 6 seasons at Butler, Stevens has accrued 166 wins, the most by a team in Division I history. Let's not forget about the two NCAA championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011, either.

Stevens' six-year, 22 million dollar contract with the Celtics is evidence that management is willing to give him time to build a successful team.

While this event may seem random and surprising, other NBA teams are doing the same.

After all, age is just a number.

Our SWX staff searched around the league to find the top ten youngest coaches after Stevens:
