Anonymous Tip Leads Deputies & K9 Ekko to Wanted Suspect

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: On Saturday July 13th, Spokane Valley Sheriff's deputies received information from an anonymous tip 36-year-old Kevin M. Heaton, a convicted felon, had felony warrants for his arrest and might be inside a room at the Roadway Inn at 6309 East Broadway in Spokane Valley.

The deputies arrived at the location at 2:45 p.m. and confirmed Heaton was there but he refused to surrender.  Not knowing if Heaton was armed along with new information that there were two Pit Bull dogs inside the room, they waited for Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy John Cook and his K9 partner Ekko to arrive.

Once on scene, Deputy Cook made an announcement he and K9 Ekko were there to assist and Ekko would be use to take Heaton into custody if he did not surrender.

Quickly after hearing the announcement, an adult female, with control of the two dogs, exited the room.  Heaton also exited the room, followed the deputies' commands and was safely taken into custody.

Heaton was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for the felony warrants of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Stolen Property.

This is another example of how valuable our K9s truly are and that their mere presence not only keeps our deputies safe, but also the suspects.
