Rattlers Clinch West Division Despite Uncertainty

Posted: Updated:

Playoff tiebreaker scenarios in any sport can be a science well beyond reasonable understanding. The Arena Football League is just the latest to cause confusion.

The Arizona Rattlers beat the New Orleans VooDoo, 79-42, Saturday, and afterwards celebrated clinching the West Division title. But ArenaFan.com claimed the celebration was premature and that the Spokane Shock were still in contention for the divisional crown.

But according to AZCentral.com, the AFL confirmed the Rattlers did, in fact, clinch the title with Saturday's win.

Even though Spokane (10-2 in the division) has a better winning percentage than Arizona (11-3), the AFL tiebreaker goes in favor of the team with the most overall wins, which would be the Rattlers.

The league determined before Saturday's contests that Arizona would win all tiebreaker scenarios with a win against New Orleans.

The result means the Shock will head into the playoffs as a wildcard team, though they could still host a first-round game should Chicago win the Central Division due to the Rush's stadium complications.
