Spokane firefighters responded to a structure fire in the area of N. Howard and W. York Monday evening.

When firefighters arrived, they found the detached garage fully engulfed in flames with flames shooting 35 to 40 feet in the air. Despite the intensity of the flames, crews were able to quickly put it out and keep it confined to the garage.

Witnesses say a woman was using a cutting tool in the garage when it ignited and started the fire. The woman was taken to the hospital with burns on her legs. The extent of her injuries are unknown at this time.

Battalion chief Joel fielder says the fire was burning so intensely that it began melting power lines meaning firefighters had to be extremely careful until Avista arrived to shut the power off.

Two Fairchild firefighters living in a home across the alley were able help before city firefighters arrived.

The exact cause remains under investigation.
