Crime Tracker: App Brings Neighborhood Watch To The Smartphone

SPOKANE, Wash. -

We know keeping an eye out for our neighbors is effective in protecting our homes from criminals. Now, an app called "Nextdoor" is helping neighbors across the country watch out for one another, including neighbors right here in Spokane.  Nextdoor has 40 neighborhood websites here in Spokane.

Craig Walters signed on to the Nextdoor app in the Corbin Park neighborhood. He says there are about 100 people signed onto the Corbin Park neighborhood site, which covers the area between Division and Post, and Buckeye and Cora.

Craig has lived in the neighborhood his entire life and says the app is useful in sharing information about car break-ins, suspicious activity, even lost dogs. You can also sign up for neighborhood alerts, which will immediately send you a text if someone posts.

Craig says this allows for a quick response from neighbors. For example, if someone breaks into a vehicle, you can post it and nearby neighbors might see where that person was headed or get a vehicle description.

Nextdoor is private to people who live in the neighborhood.  You have to verify your address to be part of the group. Nextdoor is free for users and so far it's had a lot of success.

The Silicon Valley company launched almost 2 years ago and there are now 15-thousand neighborhood sites across the country.

Coverage criticism leads to new conversation about homelessness in Spokane

    Thursday, July 20 2017 10:16 PM EDT2017-07-21 02:16:44 GMT

SPOKANE, Wash. - This story originated as a post to KHQ, from a viewer, upset about this homeless camp below Kendall Yards. After the initial report on Facebook, I got a lot of comments -  many people were offended about how i described the camp. One person who was very vocal, was Ellie. I asked if she would meet with me - and she said yes. As upset as she is with our coverage - she welcomed the chance to make others understand that this is a conversation
