Late-Game Heroics Save Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. -

It took some late-game heroics from Kevin Torres and Ryan Cordell, but the Spokane Indians escaped with a 2-1 win over the Tri-City Dust Devils in front of 5,190 fans on Future Texas Rangers Night presented by City Auto Body and ESPN 700/ESPN 1080.

Cordell added three hits to push his average up to .267, including a long double to centerfield field to score Torres from second in the bottom of the eighth inning. Just one batter before, Torres - who's hitting .342 in his past ten games - hit home Janluis Castro to tie the ballgame.

Right hander Kelvin Vasquez shined in the start, throwing a season-high 84 pitches in six innings of work. He gave up one run after catcher Joe Jackson dropped a ball at home plate, which resulted in the earned run. Vasquez gave up four hits and struck out eight. He now leads Spokane with 32 strikeouts on the season. John Straka relieved Vasquez in the seventh and pitched two innings of one-hit ball earning the win. Keone Kela, making his Indians debut, pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.

Spokane wore special edition Texas Rangers jerseys tonight, and each jersey will be auctioned off online next week starting on Monday, July 22nd. All proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of Eastern Washington.

The Indians will return home next Tuesday, July 23rd, for a quick three-game homestand against the Vancouver Canadians to start the second half of the Northwest League season. That night will be Triple Play Sweepstakes presented by Triple Play Family Fun Park, 103.9 BOB FM, 790 KJRB and Kids Newspaper. If the Indians complete a triple play during the first nine innings of the game, one lucky fan in attendance will win $33,333! Sign up at the game for your chance to win!

Tickets for all Spokane Indians home games are available for purchase at the Indians Ticket Office, spokaneindians.com or ticketswest.com. Reserve your seats today by calling (509) 343-OTTO (6886).
