The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team again finds itself among the nation's elite in the classroom, ranking 14th in the 2013 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll as announced by the organization Thursday (July 18).

This year's honor marks the 12th time EWU has made the prestigious list. The Eagles have earned a spot on the honor roll 11 times under 12-year head coach Wendy Schuller. This year's squad had a team GPA of 3.491.

"This honor is a testament to the hard work our team put in this past year," Schuller said. "We're very proud to receive this award considering it takes into account the work done throughout the school year, not just one quarter. We emphasize academics from day one here at Eastern, and this award signifies what our program stands for."

Eastern has found its name on the list in 12 of the 18 years the honor roll has existed, earning seven top-five rankings. EWU topped the list following the 2003-04 season and ranked third at the end of the 2002-03, 2004-05 and 2005-06 campaigns.

EWU and North Dakota were the two Big Sky schools ranked in this year's honor roll. UND placed fifth with a team GPA of 3.546.

The Eagles made their fourth-consecutive appearance in the Big Sky Tournament last season, advancing to the semifinal round. Eastern earned a spot in the 2013 WNIT, losing a heartbreaker in double-overtime to Washington in the tournament's opening round. EWU finished the year with a 19-13 record and a 14-6 league mark, good for third place.

This award annually recognizes NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2011-12 season marks the 17th year in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.

A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point, and teams must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
