Woman Sexually Assaulted During Church Service; Sex Offender Arrested

KIROTV.COM - A 25-year-old woman was sexually assaulted Sunday morning during a church service and a 37-year-old sex offender was arrested, police said. The incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Yale Avenue North.

According to police, a man, who was sitting behind a woman, reached over and lifted a woman's skirt to look underneath. The woman did not know what had happened, but her relatives saw the incident and escorted the man out of the church.

Before relatives could return to the church, the man went back inside the church through a side door.  Police said the man then sat next to the woman and lifted her skirt again and sexually assaulted her.

The woman got away from the man and her relatives held him down until police arrived. When police arrived, the man told officers he had mental health problems and is taking medication.

According to police, officers found out that the man is a registered sex offender. He was arrested and then booked into King County Jail for investigation of rape.
