SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - US Highway 97 remains closed because of a wildfire near Satus Pass.

The state Department of Transportation says the highway is closed between the towns of Toppenish and Goldendale. That's because flames and smoke are making for hazardous driving conditions.

The fire is within the Yakama Indian Reservation.

PREVIOUS STORY:

TOPPENISH, Wash. (AP) - Washington Transportation Department officials say a new south-central Washington wildfire burning on both sides of U.S. Highway 97 has prompted the closure of a stretch of that highway between Toppenish and Goldendale.

The department said late Wednesday afternoon that flames and smoke were causing hazardous driving conditions.

The Yakima Herald-Republic said the fire first reported Wednesday morning had burned across about 1,200 acres - or nearly 2 square miles - by Wednesday evening.

Forty firefighters and two water-dropping helicopters fought the fire, which sent up a huge column of white smoke.

The wildfire is burning in forest and grassland on the Yakama reservation north of the summit of Satus Pass. Its cause was not immediately known.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Jonathan Renfro’s hair is a little longer; he’s clean-shaven and wore a suit and tie for his first day of trial. That compared to when we saw him a few weeks ago when he was wearing a prison jumpsuit. Despite the makeover, Renfro was expressionless as the state gave an emotion-packed opening statement. The state touched on why Renfro was even carrying a gun while he was on parole.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Hiking up a hill in a north Spokane neighborhood isn’t how Councilman Mike Fagan planned on spending his Sunday evening, but then he got a call from a long-time constituent. “He says ‘Hey Mike I need to text you some pictures’,” said Fagan. “So he texts me a video and a photograph of just a huge amount of used syringes.”
