Pullman Arson Suspect Waives Bail Hearing In Federal Court

SPOKANE, Wash – Arson suspect Bryan Kitchen made a very brief appearance in federal court in Spokane Monday, and waived his right to a bail hearing.

That means he will continue to be held in the custody of U.S. Marshals without bail, but can revisit the issue in the future if he so chooses.

Kitchen is facing charges in the $13 million dollar arson of an apartment complex under construction for Washington State University students in Pullman. The three-alarm blaze broke out in the early morning of July 14th, and burned four buildings to the ground.

Kitchen appeared in Whitman County court on a felony arson charge on July 23rd and pleaded not guilty. Both Kitchen and his wife declined to comment to KHQ, but court records revealed Kitchen told police he had voices in his head and admitted to lighting a pile of debris on fire with his cigarette lighter, then watching it burn for 20 minutes before realizing it was getting out of control.

The ATF picked Kitchen up on a federal charge of "malicious use of fire to damage property used in interstate commerce" on July 24th and he pleaded not guilty to that charge in federal court.

If convicted, Kitchen faces between 5-20 years in federal custody, and/or a $250,000 fine.

The local Whitman County case against him is on hold pending the resolution of the federal case.
