Chicago's Interesting Route to the Playoffs

Updated:

While the Chicago Rush's travel plans to take on the Shock on Thursday for the first round of the AFL playoffs might appear routine, their journey to the Central Division title over San Antonio was not.

With all the talk about Spokane and Arizona's potential tie-breakers in the final game of the regular season, it is interesting to note that Chicago and San Antonio ended the season with identical 10-8 records.

AFL officials scoured the stat books to compare scores, outcomes and point totals to determine what team one-upped the other. However, after going four-deep in all categories of the AFL tie-breaker list, neither team had a leg up. So it was onto the fifth tie-breaker, which finally declared Chicago the division champion.

Readers beware: This is about to get messy.

Here's the shakedown:

1. Record in head-to-head games-Chicago and San Antonio split their season series, 1-1.

2. Record within the division-Chicago and San Antonio were both 2-2 in divisional play.

3. Record against common opponents-Both Chicago and San Antonio had a 9-8 record when playing common opponents (San Jose, Tampa, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Iowa, Cleveland, Spokane, Utah, New Orleans, and Philadelphia).

4. Point differential in head-to-head match-ups-On April 5th, Chicago defeated San Antonio 48-41 (7 points) while on June 15, San Antonio defeated Chicago 61-54 (7 points).

5. Point differential in games against common opponents-Chicago outscored common opponents by 27 points while San Antonio was outscored by common opponents by 94 points for a total difference of 121 points.

Get it?

If not, feel free to read it over again (I did).

Of course, none of this matters if Chicago cannot best the Shock at Spokane Veteran's Memorial Arena Thursday night. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. on SWX (Comcast channel 115).
