New Type Of Stink Bug Could Cause Problems For Growers

YAKIMA, Wash. - Agencies in Eastern Washington are preparing for a possible invasion of stink bugs.

The bugs are already a nuisance to tree fruit growers.

However, a new species originally from Asia is slowly spreading across the western United States.

USDA researchers say the new type is already causing problems on the east coast.

Just last year, they found two of the bugs in the West Valley area of Yakima.

"It's in an area where it lacks biological control, so there are things that normally keep pests and non-pests in check: predators, parasites, diseases, that sort of thing," said USDA Entomologist Peter Landolt.

The USDA is only monitoring the stink bug population right now.

They're currently testing ways to attract the bugs, to make traps more effective
